Austra is the pop project of Canadian singer and composer Katie Stelmanis, and is coming to Melkweg. Katie Stelmanis, a classically trained musician and opera enthusiast with four previous albums and a Canadian Screen Award to her name. You know Austra’s astonishing voice – unique and operatic, infused with courage and sophistication. She is the kind of woman you might be too intimidated to approach in a bar. Her voice pulls you onto the dance floor like a siren, as the beats build toward the hypnotic chorus.

On November 14, her new album Chin Up Buttercup will be released. Katie Stelmanis describes Chin Up Buttercup as a story about “the alienating feeling of being heartbroken in a world that feels uncomfortable and inconvenienced by your pain.” Mournful lyrics about the humiliation of heartbreak are combined with euphoric, Eurodance-inspired synth melodies. On March 19, Austra will fill Melkweg with the raw emotion and hypnotic energy of her new album.
