Around the table: a communal lunch with artist Anita Kluge at Framer Framed Noord

On 10 August, artist Anita Kluge takes over the kitchen at Framer Framed Noord. She prepares a delicious lunch for local residents. Before the meal, residents are warmly invited to contribute their ideas on the venue’s future programme during an interactive brainstorming session.

Kluge is originally from Bhopal, India, and currently lives in the Molenwijk neighbourhood. For her, the connection with the earth is essential, which is strongly reflected in her love of clay as an artistic medium. In her work, she draws deep inspiration from her grandmother’s Gond tribe, one of the largest and oldest tribes in India. Gond art is characterised by a strong emphasis on nature (earth, fire, animals, the Tree of Life) and the use of striking, complementary colours.

As well as her spatial art, Kluge enjoys sharing her cultural traditions with the neighbourhood. She has previously run workshops in the Molenwijk on the Indian Rangoli welcome ritual. Hospitality is therefore central to her philosophy, which is strongly inspired by the Hindu belief that ‘Every guest is a god’. Just as she forges connections through clay and earth, she now uses the kitchen and communal meals as a means of sharing stories and bringing local residents closer together.

Framer Framed Noord is a space for and by local residents, artists and cultural partners. The programme is structured around three interlinked themes: Participating, Creating Together and Homemade.

The brainstorming session is part of ‘Creating Together’, which focuses on projects initiated or developed by local residents. Anyone from the surrounding neighbourhoods is welcome to come along, enjoy the food provided by Kluge and contribute ideas for the Framer Framed Noord programme.

In addition, Framer Framed Noord hosts the Textile Atelier every Monday, run by ‘Molenwijk Door Elkaar’. Participants work on their sewing, embroidery or textile projects. Two local volunteers are on hand to help with any questions about sewing machines and other techniques.
