AFRICA IS THE PRESENT

AFRICA IS THE PRESENT

Africa Is the Present presents paintings and installations by contemporary African artists living and working in the Netherlands, in constellation with masks and sculptures connected to traditions and forms of African spirituality. Some objects are ritualistic, others aesthetic. The provenance of some is known, while others have been partly eaten away by worms and termites.

Together, the participating artists arrange the space and explore how, through a constellation of contemporary art and heritage, visitors can engage with perspectives on African philosophy. Visitors are also invited to take part in this exchange by sharing any knowledge they may have about the objects on display.

How can we contribute to a pan-African dialogue about identity?

What happens to the meaning and experience of a sculpture when it is placed in a different cultural context? And how do we shape the interactions that emerge as a result?

The exhibition is organised by Stichting De Overlevering, in collaboration with, among others, Daniel Dansou Hotegni, Michael Katundu, John Kayongo and Joyful Events Company. With contributions from Benin by Patricorel (Patrick Bessan) and Makef Enagnon.

During the opening weekend and the final weekend, the exhibition comes to life even more with food, dance, performances, live music and Afrobeats.
