DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, concerns over social media’s impact on cognit
ive abilities has\nbeen growing. While it’s very hard to prove a direct ca
usal link with online\nplatforms\, studies have show that since the early-
to-mid-2010s\, literacy\n[https:] and abilities like reasoning and problem
solving [https:] have been\ndeclining.\n\nIn tandem with this measured de
cline in literacy we see the theory that social\nmedia\, or short-form vid
eo content\, is ushering in a new age of orality [https:]\ngaining popular
ity. During the first oral era\, before the invention of the\nwritten word
and widespread literacy\, the main way of sharing information was\nverbal
ly. The switch to a literate culture is thought to not only have changed\n
our relation with information\, but even to have reshaped our consciousnes
	s. Now\,\nwith contemporary social media\, some theorists speculate that w
e’re in a second\noral age\, where the characteristics of verbal communica
tion are returning as the\nprimary mode of transferring information within
our network of online platforms.\n\nWith the Symposihmm: The New Orality
we want to explore this pivotal moment. Are\nonline platforms chipping awa
y at our ability to read and understand? Are we\nentering a new oral age\,
and what are the implications of this? Are there\nfruitful ways to push b
ack against this shift\, or should we be searching for\nmore meaningful wa
ys to make sense of these new modalities so we can navigate\nour way throu
	gh them?\n\n📋 Program 13.30–14.45\n\n * Welcome and introduction\n * Talk
