How\ncan we make sense of this paranoid era in online platforms? And how are our\nminds and our planet being captured\, rendere d\, and manipulated? In the 2000s\,\nStanford University taught ‘captology ’\, a course on computers as persuasive\ntechnologies. It’s perhaps no sur prise that Mike Krieger\, who went on to create\nInstagram\, took this cla ss. Over the past twenty years\, social media platforms\nhave continued to perfect the tools of persuasion. They have figured out with\nextreme prec ision how to grab and hold our attention\, while simultaneously\nbecoming the main source of information for many people. Following these shifts\non line\, artist and researcher Trevor Paglen has argued that these platforms are\nthe perfect place for “influence operations”\, referring to the psyo ps\n(psychological operations) of secret services. Whereas back in the day no one on\nthe internet knew you were a dog\n[https://en.wikipedia.org/wi ki/On_the_Internet\,_nobody_knows_you're_a_dog]\,\ntoday you can’t tell wh o’s a bot\, troll\, or CIA agent [https:].  A notion that\ncan feed into c onspiratorial thinking and schizoposting [https:]. For Paglen\, we\nare cu rrently moving from surveillance capitalism into an era of psyops\ncapital ism\, where our behaviour is not only being tracked for profit\, but also\ nmanipulated and steered. Others are calling this era\, and the online vis ual\nculture in its wake\, “pysop realism” [https:]\, pointing to conspira cy minded\nposts rooted in distrust and paranoia.\n\nWhile we comment\, po st\, and scroll our way through social media—externalising\nour thoughts f or data capture—the rampant digitisation and replication of the\nearth and biological life is quietly taking place. Companies like Quixel\, with\nov er 18\,000 3D assets that they’ve captured—plants\, rocks\, logs\, coral r eefs\,\nforest floors—sell our earth back to us to be used in gaming and o ther\nindustries. Google Maps has led to Google Earth has led to the end-g oal of\ndigitally capturing the entire planet in order to create digital t wins\, train AI\nworld models [https:]\, ‘preserve’ habitats and monuments on the brink of\ncollapse\, and build predictive systems. Palantir thrive s on this data hoarding\,\nusing it to analyse and create connections with in disconnected data sets for\nmilitarisation and surveillance purposes. I n the US\, Flock cameras scan around\n20 billion license plates every mont h\, tracking the movement of people within\ncities and between states. And surveillance is expanding even further\, onto our\nown bodies\, with Meta selling over 7 million pairs of their Ray-Ban smart\nglasses in 2025\, a huge jump from previous years.
