The traces of the Nieuwmarkt

What are your favourite routes in Amsterdam? Everyone who lives in Amsterdam has an invisible map of the city in their mind. The way we move through the city and the choices we make are shaped by this mental map. The Amsterdam RealTime project, a diary in tracks, makes this map visible.

Twenty-four years ago, Waag, Esther Polak and Jeroen Kee developed the installation AmsterdamREALTIME, which uses modern technology to explore a new method of cartography, on the occasion of the exhibition “Maps of Amsterdam 1866-2000” in what was then the Amsterdam Municipal Archives.

During Waag Open on Thursday 7 May, we will set to work drawing routes at the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood.

The workshop will be given by visual artist Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum van PolakVanBekkum. Participants will capture each other's routes through observation and water colour painting.

About Esther Polak

Esther Polak is active in the field of new media and was one of the first artists to experiment with GPS. Since 2010, Polak has been working full-time with Ivar van Bekkum as the artist duo PolakVanBekkum.
