Gudskul: Collective Study and Contemporary Art Ecosystem in Jakarta, Indonesia, invited artists and filmmakers from around the world to submit one-minute films in search of answers to these questions. They selected 20 films by artists from diverse locations for their series ‘Collective Studies’. This curated selection aims to gather and present diverse perspectives from various works that contribute to shaping the meaning of collectivity.

Handsworth Songs by John Akomfrah, a member of the Black Audio Film Collective (1986, 58,33 min.)

This award-winning poetic film responds to the 1985 uprisings in Handsworth and London, challenging how British media reduced these events to simple narratives of disorder. Instead, the film evokes a broad range of voices, tones, and registers. An associative mosaic in which raw street footage, scenes of commemorations of the victims, and testimonies from witnesses and others contrast with photographs and news footage.
