So grab a drink and come watch great animation with us!For many viewers, Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings (1978) is remembered through worn VHS copies and is often overshadowed by Peter Jackson’s later blockbuster adaptation. Long criticized for its unfinished story and heavy use of rotoscope animation, the film nevertheless deserves renewed appreciation. Bakshi accomplished what filmmakers like Walt Disney, John Boorman, and Stanley Kubrick could not: bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s vast and complex world to the big screen. Its distinctive blend of live-action reference and animation created a unique visual style that even influenced Jackson’s later films.
