The Knot
Join us for a screening and aftertalk of The Knot, a film that explores bridal wear as a powerful act of self-expression, especially for Black women.
For the eighth edition of “Between the Sun, Wind and Waves” we are screening the film ‘The Knot’. This fashion film, a love letter to Black women in bridal, redefines elegance as self-expression. Through lace, braids, nails, and jewelry, the collection resists Eurocentric norms, reclaiming aesthetics often dismissed as “too much” and transforming them into emblems of culture and beauty. Directed with rhythm and voice, each look tells its own story, asking: Why should Black women erase themselves on their wedding day? Designed by Dev Skylar, a Curaçao-born, St. Maarten–raised designer, these creations honor individuality and identity, proving that bridal wear begins the moment she says ‘yes’.
In this program Badr Ezzat Badr Ezzat is an Egyptian self-taught filmmaker and photographer, based in the Netherlands. His work blends culture, storytelling, and emotion, often creating bridges between worlds that don’t always meet. With a background in both photography and film, he seeks to represent the underrepresented and give voice to stories that deserve to be seen. Badr’s imagery is cinematic, intimate, and rooted in heritage: transforming simple moments into narratives that feel universal and yet deeply personal. Dev Skylar Dev Skylar is a fashion designer, currently based in Amsterdam, specialising in bridal wear. Originally from Curaçao and raised in St. Maarten, she was deeply influenced by her grandmother, a designer and seamstress, as well as by years of design programs her parents encouraged throughout her childhood. Dev’s work is soft, expressive, and deeply inspired by black women, challenging the ways they have been whitewashed and underrepresented in Western bridal fashion. With a background that spans photography, graphic design, brand design, and painting, she approaches fashion as a collaborative and intimate act, transforming bridal wear into garments that honour both comfort and individuality.1 day ago
