The new Spirit Quartet unites four musicians of different backgrounds, personalities, and generations.

They share a thirst for adventure, a dedication to the mysteries of sound, and a love of freedom in musical expression. Their program includes original compositions as well as works by saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc (1946–2021), a contemporary of William Parker and David S. Ware, and part of the generation of musicians who, from the 1970s onward, built on the groundbreaking work of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and John Coltrane.

Trombonist **Steve Swell **is one of the most complete musicians of his generation, having performed with Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, and Peter Brötzmann. Ziv Taubenfeld, one of today’s most remarkable bass clarinetists, is active in the creative music scenes of Amsterdam and Lisbon. Bassist Wilbert de Joode is a legend of Dutch jazz, having played with virtually everyone. The quartet is completed by Sun-Mi Hong, currently making waves on the Dutch scene.

Nico Chientaroli and Ada Rave both moved from Argentina to Amsterdam in 2013 to explore the city’s improvised music scene. Since then, they have become key figures within it, performing together in numerous projects over the years — each with a strong and distinctive voice, constantly pushing the boundaries of their instruments and sharing their music with audiences worldwide.
This evening, the partners perform together as a duo.
