Sranan Folktalesis een horrorwebserie over Surinaamse tradities en bijgeloof. De mysteries van het leven, soms beangstigend maar ookmagisch, vormen de kerninspirtatie voor deze korte films. Deze serie verteltverhalen over het bovennatuurlijke en volkslegendes die vooral wordendoorgegeven door de oudere Surinamers, die vaak geloven inonverklaarbare dingen. Vaak bevatten ze een waarschuwing over wat jeniet moet doen. Wie niet horen wilt, moet de consequenties maarondervinden.

Sranan Folktales is a horror web series about Surinamese traditions and superstitions. The mysteries of life, sometimes frightening but also magical, form the core inspiration for these short films. This series tells stories about the supernatural and folk legends that are mainly passed on by older Surinamese people, who often believe in inexplicable things. They often contain a warning about what not to do. Those who do not want to listen will have to face the consequences.
Sranan Folktales: ASEMA (35 min)
Ga na zonsondergang niet naar buiten, waarschuwt oma de tienjarige Deon die bij haar in Suriname op bezoek is. Er waart namelijk een een vampierachtige 'asema' rond die kinderen lust. Maar Deon gaat toch op zoek. In dit zesde deel van de in Surinaamse jeugdhorrorserie Sranan Folktales, gaat de tienjarige Deon tijdens de zomervakantie bij zijn oma logeren. Daar leert hij van buurjongen Jimmy over een nieuwe gekke buurvrouw, waarvan gezegd wordt dat ze een 'asema' is. Een vampierachtig wezen, dat zich overdag als oude vrouw verkleedt, maar ’s nachts als vuurbal eropuit trekt. Aangetrokken door het avontuur besluiten Deon en zijn beste vriend Jimmy op onderzoek uit te gaan. Maar oma waarschuwde hen niet voor niets het donker te mijden.

Don't go outside after sunset, warns grandmother to ten-year-old Deon, who is visiting her in Suriname. There is a vampire-like “asema” roaming around that preys on children. But Deon goes looking for it anyway. In this sixth part of the Surinamese youth horror series Sranan Folktales, ten-year-old Deon stays with his grandmother during the summer holidays. There he learns from his neighbour Jimmy about a new crazy neighbour, who is said to be an “asema”. A vampire-like creature who dresses up as an old woman during the day but goes out at night as a fireball. Attracted by adventure, Deon and his best friend Jimmy decide to investigate. But their grandmother warned them to avoid the dark for a reason.
