Salon Van Goens

Cellist Doris Hochscheid and pianist Frans van Ruth, together with Mattijs van de Woerd and Manon Schreurs, will be your hosts this evening during a Salon in Belle Époque style with a contemporary twist. This salon is the festive conclusion of their project around the forgotten cellist/composer Daniel van Goens, on whom Doris and Frans have conducted intensive research in recent years. They released a CD with his music, unearthed from sometimes obscure archives throughout Europe. Frans wrote a biography about him. And together with Mattijs van de Woerd and Manon Schreurs, they made a podcast about their search for this special composer and his unjustly forgotten music.

Daniel van Goens (1858 - 1904) moved in the salons of the Parisian fin-de-siècle. But what was it actually like in those salons? We know that all kinds of artists gathered there, often around a wealthy and somewhat eccentric hostess, and that the evenings were a colorful mix of music, literature, conversations and of course canapés and drinks. That is what you can expect this evening. We will furnish the large hall of Splendor with tables and chairs, beautifully set with snacks and drinks. There will of course be music: Grieg, Fauré, Rachmaninoff, Debussy and of course Daniel van Goens. There was so much beautiful material, both for the CD and for the podcast, that we had to choose. “Kill your darlings” - that's just how it goes. But some of this material is too good to leave behind, and that is why we are going to present it in this salon. Doris, Frans, Mattijs and Manon will occasionally join the visitors, in between the music. There will be special conversations (in Dutch!) and playful scenes. There will be two mystery guests. In short: exactly as it was during the salons of the Parisian Belle Époque.
