Performance Buhlebezwe Siwani

Performance ‘ulwela amaza’ by Buhlebezwe Siwani on March 1st and 2nd, 17.30.
We are happy to invite you to the performance ‘ulwela amaza’ by Buhlebezwe Siwani, which is part of her current exhibition at ROZENSTRAAT.
The piece activates the immersive video-installation throughout our gallery, bringing in extra layers of meaning to a deeply embodied choreography that ebbs and flows in a number of significant sites in Amsterdam, Middelburg and their surrounding waters. The work asks how these cities are connected to Blackness and life, as well as what is known and unknown about histories of presence in and removal from this place, the Netherlands.
Countering the landscape urge of the horizon line, the film insists on portraiture, framing the six performers whom the artist works with as time traveling inhabitants of multiple eras and dimensions. Their transient collective and solo scores can be read as invocations of the people who were brought to the Netherlands involuntarily and who now, in the present, choose to remain.
The immersive work uncovers lives and memories that have been erased from the collective narrative, challenging viewers to confront these forgotten histories. As the waters are stirred, the performance engages different sensibilities, implicating all who watch and listen in the ongoing process of remembering and reimagining silenced stories.
‘ulwela amaza’ will be performed by Harvey Burke-Hamilton, Imanirayy, Lana Lauryn Renfrum, Logan Hon Mua, Marilou Fortuné and Oumar Jalloh.
The event is free of charge but a regular entrance ticket is required.
