New York, today. In the strip clubs of Brighton Beach works the quick-witted, tough-as-nails Ani (Mikey Madison), a young sex worker who fends for herself and lets no one intimidate her, until the charming, obscenely rich Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) whirls into her life. The spoiled son of a Russian oligarch showers her with luxury and promises, and in a haze of infatuation and recklessness the two marry on impulse in Las Vegas. But when the news reaches Russia, Vanya’s parents send their henchmen after the young couple to have the marriage annulled, and Ani’s fairy tale turns into a wild, riotously funny chase through the streets of New York. Director Sean Baker shapes his modern anti-Cinderella into a raw, energetic screwball comedy about class, love and money, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was later crowned with five Oscars, including Best Picture.
