Off-Screen’s Media Pub Talk: Media and the Self

Off-Screen’s Media Pub Talk: Media and the Self
On September 30, Off-Screen is hosting a new edition of the Media Pub Talk. The theme of this edition is Media and the Self: how does media shape our self-image and the way we live?

During this conversation, we will explore three pressing questions:

  • The difference between self-presentation in everyday life and in online spaces – and the role of AI in this.
  • Reality TV – how authentic are participants under the gaze of the camera?
  • Living in the panopticon – how does our behavior change under constant surveillance?

Our guest speakers are:

  • Prof. Mark Deuze (Media Studies, UvA), specialized in journalism and well-being in the creative industries.
  • Dr. Alice Fleerackers (Journalism & Civic Engagement, UvA), freelance writer and researcher focused on journalism and health communication.
  • Dr. Toni Pape (Associate Professor, UvA), Television and Cross-media Studies team & Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis.

The evening will be interactive: our moderator will engage the speakers in conversation, after which the audience will have plenty of time to ask questions and join the discussion.
