Hoewel Ties Mellema onbetwistbaar een virtuoos op de saxofoon is, ziet hij zichzelf in de eerste plaats als muzikant. Zijn ambacht komt tot uiting in zijn voortdurende verkenning van de grenzen van de muziek. Hij ontving vele prijzen, waaronder de prestigieuze Nederlandse Muziekprijs. Verschillende albums, zowel als soloartiest als ensemblespeler, werden uitgebracht door Amstel Records en later door het zelf opgerichte PEAX Records. Mellema is net als La Berge ook medeoprichter van Splendor. Thomas Myrmel is een componist die zijn compositorische technieken niet alleen op muziek loslaat maar ook op tekst, dans, film en visuele media. Samen met Anat Spiegel heeft Thomas de experimentele rockgroep Controllar opgericht. Hij is ook medeoprichter van het Amsterdamse componistencollectief Monotak. Zijn expertise als uitvoerend artiest is electronische muziek.

Beide musici komen uit Keulen. Ze zijn beide ook organisatoren en curatoren van respectivelijk een festival voor creatieve klarinetmuziek (Festival Multiphonics sinds 2013) en in een concertreeks in Atelier Dürrenfeld Keulen (avantgarde jazz). Dit duo van zeer ervaren en veelzijdige musici sluit goed aan bij de set van Ties Mellema & Thomas Myrmel, ook op zoek naar ongewone klanken op hun instrumenten.

Blad & Blazers Festival

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam (NNA), dé maandelijkse concertserie voor hedendaagse kamermuziek, presenteert voor het eerst in hun zesjarige bestaan het ‘Blad & Blazers Festival’. Een vierdaags muzikaal evenement dat plaatsvindt van vrijdag 16 t/m zondag 19 oktober 2025 in het Plein Theater in Amsterdam Oost. Met een programma van gevestigde (inter-) nationale musici, jong talent en cross-overs met beeldende kunst en dans geven curatoren Aspasia Nasopoulou (componist) en Fie Schouten (basklarinettist) inspirerende nieuwe muziek en composities een podium.

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam

Met een voorliefde voor experiment en vernieuwing presenteert het Plein Theater Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. Gloednieuwe composities van toonaangevende musici vormen de ingrediënten van deze concertserie voor hedendaagse kamermuziek. Basklarinettist Fie Schouten en componist Aspasia Nasopoulou cureren de serie, die maandelijks op zondagmiddag te beluisteren is. Doorgaans in het Plein Theater zelf, soms op locatie.

Ties Mellema saxophone & electronics, own compositions & improvisations
Ties Mellema is unquestionably a virtuoso on the saxophone. He has received many awards, including the prestigious Dutch Music Prize. Like La Berge, Mellema is also a co-founder of Splendor. Thomas Myrmel is a composer who unleashes his compositional techniques not only on music but also on text, dance, film and visual media. Together with Anat Spiegel, Thomas founded the experimental rock group Controllar. He is also a co-founder of the Amsterdam-based composer collective Monotak. His expertise as a performing artist is electronic music.

Annette Maye & Carl-Ludwig Hübsch bass clarinet + tuba
Both musicians hail from Cologne. They are both also organisers and curators of a festival for creative clarinet music (Festival Multiphonics since 2013) and in a concert series at Atelier Dürrenfeld Cologne (avant-garde jazz). This duo of highly experienced and versatile musicians fits well with Ties Mellema & Thomas Myrmel's set, also looking for unusual sounds on their instruments.

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam shines a spotlight on wind instruments during the very first edition of the Blad & Blazers Festival. From October 16 to 19, enjoy four full days of inspiring new music from established (inter)national musicians, emerging talent, and exciting crossovers with visual arts and dance. Let yourself be swept away amid sheet music and the autumn leaves swirling outside!

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam

With a love for experiment and innovation, Plein Theater presents Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. Brand-new compositions by leading musicians form the core of this concert series dedicated to contemporary chamber music. Bass clarinetist Fie Schouten and composer Aspasia Nasopoulou curate the series, which can be enjoyed on Sunday afternoons each month—usually at Plein Theater itself, and occasionally at other locations.
