ENG Bio Yorán VroomHe began playing music at a young age. Eddy Veldman, born on 5 October 1951 in Paramaribo (Suriname), is a musician with an impressive track record. He is renowned for his dynamic, creative and imaginative drumming. He is also an extremely driven professional, a born entertainer and an inspiration to many other drummers.
“Veldman’s work on the drums is of the highest standard, an opinion shared by the many artists from various disciplines with whom he performs” (de Volkskrant).
Veldman's career began in the working-class Frimangron neighbourhood of Paramaribo, where he first picked up the guitar before discovering his true passion: the drums. He moved to the Netherlands in 1971 and, after a football injury ended his sporting ambitions, devoted himself fully to music. He went on to play with groups such as The Needles, Reality and Solat, performing and touring throughout Europe and South America, and shared stages with musical greats including Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock and Marcus Miller.
With bassist Pablo Nahar he founded the legendary Surinam Music Ensemble in 1981, whose explosive fusion of jazz and bebop with Surinamese kaseko — affectionately dubbed "Paramaribob" — caused a sensation at the 1983 North Sea Jazz Festival, where the acclaimed live album Body Guide was recorded. In 1983 he also scored a Dutch top-10 hit with singer Lisa Boray ("Break It Out"), and from 1985 he was the drummer in the backing band of the successful trio Mai Tai. Later projects include the OPOYEYE Band and NLSURI CONNECTION. A sought-after session and studio musician with a varied discography, Veldman studied at the Muzieklyceum Utrecht and the Sweelinck Conservatoire in Amsterdam, with the vibraphone as his second instrument. For over two decades he has taught percussion at the Amsterdam Music School and at his own Eddy Veldman Drum Academy (EVDA), while continuing to tour at home and abroad.
