Michael Moore & "Universe Quartet"
Some music grabs you instantly; other music lingers long after the last note has faded. The Michael Moore Universe Quartet belongs firmly to the latter category. On 1 December, this remarkable ensemble will appear at Splendor Amsterdam to present Ballads & Dedications,
an intimate, adventurous journey through lyricism, improvisation, and imaginative sonic landscapes.
Led by multi-instrumentalist Michael Moore—a key figure in both American jazz and the Dutch improvised music scene—the quartet explores the terrain between subtle melodies, spontaneous outbursts, and surprising textures. Moore is joined by a brilliant younger generation of musicians: Guillermo Celano (guitar), Omer Govreen (double bass), and Onno Govaert(drums). Their interplay is both free and refined, effortlessly shifting between elegant chamber jazz, expressive improvisations, and playful experimentation.
The concert promises a rich selection from Moore’s extensive body of work, complemented by distinctive interpretations of pieces by, among others, Thelonious Monk. Expect understated ballads, fiery eruptions, and moments of pure imagination. The varied instrumentation—from alto saxophone and clarinet to occasional timbral surprises like Moore’s well-known nose flute—creates a layered and intimate listening experience that fits perfectly within Splendor’s warm acoustics.
Allow yourself to be carried along by four musicians who blend tradition, innovation, and adventure into a seamless whole. An evening for lovers of jazz that dares to dream.
