Memory Ball: A hands-on memory workshop

Memory Ball: A hands-on memory workshop
In this hands-on workshop you add your story to Memory Ball, a shared, growing archive of Amsterdam memories, and make a personal memory object to take home.

Memory Ball is a handcrafted sphere that glows when someone comes near and lights up each time a new memory is added. Visitors contribute a memory in text, image or voice to a shared, browser based archive: no app or account needed, and you can stay anonymous. For this Pakhuis edition, Memory Ball focuses on the city centre around Pakhuis de Zwijger, from the IJ waterfront and the old harbour to Centraal Station, and places visitors’ memories alongside archival footage, photos and sound from Beeld & Geluid (Netherlands Institute for Sound & Vision). During the workshop, artists Muskan Jain and Mehmet Berk Bostancı invite you to share a memory, explore how personal and collective memories connect, and create your own memory object to take home. Memory Ball is a collaboration with Beeld & Geluid and part of Designing Technology For All.

About the Facilitators

Muskan Jain is an Amsterdam-based designer, artist and design researcher who works on subjects people find hard to talk about: memory, ageing, digital legacy and what technology decides on people’s behalf. Her practice moves from fieldwork and interviews to prototypes and participatory installations. She holds an MSc in Digital Design from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and a BDes in Animation Film Design from NID Ahmedabad. She is co-creator of Conversations That Matter, presented at RSD14 (OCAD University, Toronto), and creator of Memory Ball, featured in the ThingsCon RIOT Report 2025 and at Design Fair 2026 at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

Mehmet Berk Bostancı is an installation artist and creative technologist based in Amsterdam. With a background in architecture and interaction design, he creates light-based and interactive installations that respond to people and the spaces they share, exploring how technology can become a medium for human connection and collective experience. His work has been shown at exhibitions, biennales and festivals including Vivid Sydney, Llum Barcelona, the Tallinn Architecture Biennale, Istanbul Modern and Sonar+D. He designs and builds his works from concept to circuit, crafting the physical object, its light and its behaviour as one artwork. He also teaches creative technologies, sharing the tools behind his practice with students and makers.
