Come to Mediamatic to have a talk with an artist in our restaurant by the water! Learn more about their work or talk about your project with the artist who inspires you. Alejandra Alarcón is open to creative consultation and discussing ideas.
Meet-a-Maker is a 30-minute session to have a one-on-one talk with artists currently working at Mediamatic. We are lucky to be inspired by the many artists who work and stay with us for exhibitions, residencies and workshops. We welcome you to meet them and be inspired as well!
About the artist
Alejandra Alarcón (she/her) is a Mexican interdisciplinary designer/artist based in Helsinki working at the intersection of food and art. Grounded in themes of commensality, embodied knowledge, and the politics of belonging, her practice often includes walking, writing, drawing, baking, cooking, and nurturing for/with others.

From mid April until mid May Alejandra will be at Mediamatic doing a residency around her project Edible Playscapes: A Embodied Dining Experience. Exploring eating as play to positively transform the traditional Western dining experience without the use of cutlery. By reimagining the dining table as a playscape, this project empowers individuals to explore with their bodies, experiment freely, and create food combinations that encourage reflections on our dining rituals. The shared metal surface, reminiscent of a food preparation area, provides a space where making a mess is acceptable and encouraged. Play becomes a means of engaging creatively and meaningfully, while emphasizing touch as a mindful and intimate way of eating, one that challenges conventional social and cultural norms. The project includes research, interviews, a workshop event and a final performance and is part of the Sanctuary for Sensory Participation program.
Alejandra speaks Spanish and English.
Topics
The conversations with Alejandra are meant for anyone whose main topics of interest are:
- Food as an artistic medium,
- parallels between design,
- art making, and cooking,
- embodied practices,
- and the seasonality of things.
