Meet-a-Maker
Come to Mediamatic to have a talk with our artists-in-residence! Learn more about their work or talk about your project with the artists who inspired you. Al-Wah'at Collective الواحات is open to creative consultation and discussing ideas.
Meet-a-Maker is a 30-minute session to have a one-on-one talk with artists currently working at Mediamatic. We are lucky to be inspired by the many artists who work and stay with us for exhibitions, residencies and workshops. We welcome you to meet them and be inspired as well!
About the artists
Formed by Ailo Ribas, Gabriella Demczuk, and Areej Ashhab in 2022, Al-Wah’at is an artist-research collective committed to growing communal practices of care and repair in ecologies labelled “wastelands”. Their work seeks to counter colonial and anthropocentric narratives around arid lands and invasive species by engaging with a diversity of knowledge—be they local, folk, scientific, or more-than-human—to promote a deeper understanding of these ecologies, especially in light of climate change. The conversation with Al-Wah'at is a moment for knowledge exchange around so-called "invasive" urban plants, their colonial histories, and their adaptive growth amid a changing environment. The collective's main themes involve:
- Investigating colonial botanical legacies in the urban landscape
- Practices of care and repair in ecologies labelled "wastelands"
- Pigment making, dyeing, eco-printing, and embroidery with local plants
