Meet-a-Maker
Come to Mediamatic to have a talk with an artist in our little greenhouses by the water! Learn more about their work or talk about your project with the artist who inspired you. Marjolijn is open to creative consultation and discussing ideas.
Meet-a-Maker is a 30-minute session to have a one-on-one talk with artists currently working at Mediamatic. We are lucky to be inspired by the many artists who work and stay with us for exhibitions, residencies and workshops. We welcome you to meet them and be inspired as well!
About the designer
The work of Marjolijn Boterenbrood arises from the phenomena of a place, in all its aspects. A square, a park in a city, a valley in Siberia or an island in the North Sea. With cartography she makes different layers of experience of a landscape visible. She grew up with maps, nautical charts. They are vital to know where you are and where the current is taking you so you don’t end up on a sandbank. By mapping, drawing, collecting materials and stories and perform actions, she lets the materials from the place like earth, mud, clay, water, seaweed, salt, wood, wax and fungi and narratives write their own score. Like a temporary director/composer/conductor/choreographer she works to connect, to transform and to find new ways to experience.
For a year, she'll be living by the water at Mediamatic, working with water and aquatic life, immersing her work in it. The space is like a ship at sea. In collaboration with the aquatic life, an underwater cartography emerges. We know less about the world beneath the surface than we do about the moon or Mars. Water and aquatic life are the heart and lungs of our planet: they produce most of the oxygen in the atmosphere and provide CO2 absorption , cooling, and biodiversity. During this period, Marjolijn creates work that makes our vulnerability and dependence on nature tangible, as well as the threat of climate change and rising sea levels.
This coincides with Mediamatic's 2026 program: Aquatoop: Exploring Amsterdam's Underwater Worlds. Redefining Our Relationship with Water, Nature, and Ecology.
