You often encounter it in the very first minutes of a series—whether it's documentary or fiction—and it doesn't go away until the final credits: the voiceover. Yet, choosing a voiceover is an artistic intervention with consequences.

When do you choose a voiceover, and when do you choose another way to tell your story? In this masterclass, Heleen Hummelen, (co-)creator of programs including Liefste Lies (VPRO 2025) and Een groot liefdesverhaal (NTR/VPRO 2017), will explore the use of a voiceover in audio storytelling. Her podcast Virus verhalen (NTR, 2020), which did feature a voiceover, won the Silver Reiss microphone in 2020. Expect audio samples, a glimpse into the production process, and practical tips.
