Marcus Henry V - On the Move
What began in 2022 as a solo project by saxophonist Marco Hijl grew in 2025 into a vivid musical conversation when Jelena Popović and Peter van Aart joined. They are more than just musicians; together they form a trio that transforms their diverse cultural backgrounds into one compelling, emotional story.
The debut album On the Move by Marcus Henry V feels like a journey through a new musical landscape. The music is a bold blend in which the warm depth of jazz meets the richness of contemporary classical music. Electronic rhythms and folkloric influences flow effortlessly through it. The result is music that reflects our modern, interconnected world: multifaceted, boundary-crossing, and constantly in motion.
The strength of Marcus Henry V lies in the contrasts between the three musicians and in the close bond that emerges from them.
Jelena Popović (piano) brings the soul of the Balkans. Her playing carries a deep emotional charge and a rich musical heritage. She forms the emotional heart of the trio, with a sound that is both powerful and subtle.
Peter van Aart (percussion) is the driving force. His playing connects acoustic and electronic rhythms into a whole that sounds both earthy and innovative. He provides the energy and movement in the music — the engine of their shared journey.
Marco Hijl (saxophone & composition) is the connecting voice. His melodies weave the diverse influences into a single, recognizable signature. His saxophone tells stories, ranging from whispering and intimate to open and immersive.
Performances by Marcus Henry V feel like a shared moment of discovery. The musicians continually challenge each other to explore new sonic worlds, naturally drawing the audience along. You don’t just attend a concert — you become part of an exchange between three distinct personalities who merge on stage into a new, shared story.
