Mami Wata (C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi, 2023)

C.J. ‘Fiery’ Obasi | 2023 | France, Nigeria | 107’ | EN subtitles
Filmhuis Cavia is proud to present Mami Wata, at its first theatrical release in the Netherlands after being presented at the prestigious film festivals of Sundance and Karlovy Vary. In this monochromatic film, Nigerian filmmaker, C.J. "Fiery" Obasi, tells the story of a village torn by the opposite pushes of the lore of tradition and the desire for innovation, as the rule of revered Mama Efe as an intermediary between the people and the all-powerful water deity Mami Wata comes under pressure as unrest spreads among the villagers. Contrasts run high in this movie, both ideologically, visually and musically, to tell a common story in a non-banale way, and from a perspective many times silenced.
The film will also be shown on the 27th of March.
