IMAGINE FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL 2025

Imagine is het grootste filmfestival voor de Fantastische film in Nederland, met het beste op het gebied van fantasy, horror, sciencefiction en alles daar tussenin. Bij Imagine draait het om de verbeelding. Volgens ons kan je het het zo gek, magisch, eng of verrassend dus wél bedenken, want Weird Is Wonderful.

In 2025 voelt Imagine de tentakels van de Elder Gods kronkelen! Het hoofdthema van het Imagine-festival 2025 is geïnspireerd op het werk en de invloed van H.P. Lovecraft. Waar Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) waanzin zag in de blik van een wezen dat de menselijke verbeelding te boven ging, gaat Imagine nog ietsje verder: misschien zit daarachter wel een nieuw universum.

Terwijl de wereld steeds meer wordt geregeerd door angst en binaire denkbeelden (zwart of wit, man of vrouw, goed of slecht), gaat dit programma juist op zoek naar nuance. De films in het A Tentacular Touch-programma laten Lovecrafts beruchte racisme en antisemitisme achter zich*, bieden een nieuw perspectief en leren je je eigen angst voor het onbekende te begrijpen en overwinnen. Het programma neemt een diepe duik in onze onderbewuste zorgen en verlangens, of het nu gaat om klassieke Lovecraftiaanse thema’s als maffe wetenschappers die de natuurwetten niet zo nauw nemen of enge sektes die interdimensionale wezens tot leven wekken, of om meer hedendaagse kosmische fantasieën rondom psychedelica en erotiek.

De bekende Nederlandse auteur W.F. Hermans schreef ooit over Lovecraft dat de angsten in zijn griezelverhalen voortkomen uit onze allergrootste onzekerheid: wat als alles waar we in geloven, niet is wat het lijkt? Dat is precies wat Lovecraft zo aantrekkelijk maakt voor het publiek van nu, dat door de pandemie, klimaatcrises en politieke chaos heeft geleerd overal vraagtekens bij te plaatsen.

De klassieke en nieuwe films in A Tentacular Touch werpen een heldere blik op een complexe wereld vol gelaagde ervaringen, waarin we allemaal weleens aan ons verstand twijfelen. Is het monster je vriend of je ergste nachtmerrie? Is waanzin wellicht wijsheid? Ben jij misschien het monster? Geef je over aan de tentakels en kom erachter!

In 2025, Imagine will be touched by the tentacles of the Elder Gods. This year’s main Imagine festival theme is inspired by the work and influence of H.P. Lovecraft. Where Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) imagined madness in the gaze of a creature beyond human comprehension, Imagine will go even further and see a glimpse of a new universe beyond it.

In a world ruled by fear and binary purity (black or white, male or female, good or bad), this programme is all about contamination. Moving beyond Lovecraft’s infamous racism and antisemitism*, the films shown in A Tentacular Touch allow you to understand your own fear of the unknown, overcome it and gain new insights. Whether it’s classic Lovecraftian tropes like mad scientists going against the laws of nature or scary cults awakening beings from another dimension, or more contemporary cosmic imaginings centred on psychedelics and eroticism, the programme will take a deep dive into our subconscious fears and desires.

The famous Dutch author W.F. Hermans once wrote about Lovecraft that the fears driving his horror stories stem from our greatest uncertainty: what if the things we believe in are not what they seem? This is exactly what makes Lovecraft so attractive to a contemporary audience, made to question everything in the wake of a pandemic, climate crises, and political upheaval.

Through classic and new films, A Tentacular Touch takes a clear-eyed look at a complex world full of multi-faceted experiences, with all of us questioning our sanity. Bloeddorst #2 Imagined – expositie
Tijdens de hele Imagine festivalperiode te bekijken in de kelder van LAB111.

Bloeddorst #2 is een unieke verzameling horrorstrips, gepresenteerd door regisseur en horrorfonaat Martin Koolhoven. Acht filmmakers leverden verhalen waar acht comic-artists mee verdergingen. De bundel is brand new, en bij de expositie Bloeddorst #2 – Imagined krijg je een bijzonder kijkje achter de schermen!

De expositie bestaat uit een selectie van A2 ‘filmposters’ die aansluiten bij de strips, gemaakt door de tekenaars zelf. Ook zie je stills uit het Bloeddorst #2-album en pagina’s uit de strip op groot formaat. Daarnaast ligt er een bloederige kopie van de comic, ter inzage. Wie durft?

Meer Bloeddorst? Op zaterdag 1 november vindt er in de Kapelzaal van LAB111 een talkshow plaats met de betrokken filmmakers en comic-artists, waaronder Ate de Jong, Bodil Matheeuwsen, David-Jan Bronsgeest, Martin Koolhoven, Floor de Goede, Maarten Gerritsen, Sterric en Gerrit Willemse. Het boek kan hier natuurlijk ook gekocht en gesigneerd worden.

Bloeddorst #2 Imagined – exhibition

Bloeddorst #2 is a unique collection of horror comics, presented by director and horror fan Martin Koolhoven. Eight filmmakers provided the backbone for the comic artists to work with. The book is brand new, and the exhibition Bloeddorst #2 – Imagined offers a one-of-a-kind look behind the scenes!

The exhibition includes a selection of A2 ‘film posters’ tied into the comics, made by the artists themselves. It also has still from the BLOEDDORST #2 album and scaled-up comic pages. You’ll also find a bloody copy of the comic for your reading pleasure. Who dares?

More Bloeddorst? On Saturday, November 1st, the Bloeddorst filmmakers and comic artists will be part of a talkshow in LAB111’s Kapelzaal.
