HOFF: One Woman One Bra

In het Keniaanse dorp Sayit staat iets bijzonders te gebeuren: voor het eerst in eeuwen krijgen de bewoners hun grond officieel op naam. Behalve de 38-jarige Star. Omdat niemand weet wie haar ouders zijn en ze niet getrouwd is, kan ze niet aantonen dat ze recht heeft op de grond waarop ze woont.

Dan doet Star een opmerkelijke ontdekking. Op de kaft van een oud fotoboek over nomaden herkent ze zichzelf als kind. Op de foto staat ook een hand met opvallende traditionele tatoeages, die ze herkent van een vrouw die in het dorp eten verkoopt. Zou dat haar moeder kunnen zijn? De vrouw ontkent, maar Star laat het er niet bij zitten.

De tijd dringt. Star probeert de buitenlandse fotograaf op te sporen, overweegt een vriend ten huwelijk te vragen en sluit zelfs een twijfelachtige deal met een hulporganisatie. Maar haar wanhopige pogingen om haar huis te behouden zetten de verhoudingen in het dorp steeds verder op scherp.

It’s a historic moment for the Kenyan village of Sayit. For the first time in centuries, residents are about to receive legal ownership of their ancestral land. But while the village celebrates, 38-year-old Star faces a very different future. With no known family ties and no husband, she has no way of proving her claim to the land she calls home.

Then an unexpected discovery gives her a glimmer of hope: on the cover of an old book about nomadic peoples, Star spots a photograph of herself as a child. A hand bearing distinctive tribal markings appears in the picture, and Star recognises them as belonging to a local food seller. Could this woman be the mother she has never known? When confronted, the woman denies any connection.

With time running out, Star refuses to give up. She sets out to track down the foreign photographer who took the picture, considers proposing marriage to a friend and even strikes a questionable deal with an NGO. But her increasingly desperate attempts to save her home threaten to turn the entire village against her.
