20:30 Doors 21:00 Happiness (1998)
Together with Fanclub Centrum, every two months we invite a special 'Amsterdammer' to curate a film night. This time the honour belongs to presenter, illustrator, columnist and documentary filmmaker Lize Kopershoek, with whom we will watch Todd Solondz's 1998 black comedy “Happiness”.
Happiness is an inky black multidrama with a cautious wink about some 20 characters struggling with homicidal tendencies, sexual fantasies, divorce, paedophilia and other difficult problems. A memorable film, thanks in part to the acting of Dylan Baker as a paedophile therapist, among others. Philip Seymour Hoffman excels as an obsessive masturbator who gets his due with obscene phone calls. With Happiness, film auteur and indie favourite Solondz proved that his breakthrough film “Welcome to the Dollhouse” was no fluke. Happiness received the International Critics Prize at Cannes.
Fanclub Centrum is an online platform that highlights all the good things the centre of Amsterdam has to offer. For locals, by locals.
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
