Gljadelov

GLYADYELOV, awarded Best Documentary at OIFF 2024, is a film by Kseniia Kravtsova capturing the life and work of Ukrainian photographer Oleksandr Glyadelov.

This film is an observation, a glimpse into the lives of others. Traveling with Oleksandr Glyadelov from Kyiv and Bucha to Kharkiv, Odesa, and Ilovaisk from the 1990s until 2022, the viewer engages as an interlocutor with the film’s characters, exploring themes of street children and the devastating wars unleashed by Russia.

Oleksandr Glyadelov is a classic of Ukrainian documentary photography. Having documented wars initiated by Russia in the post-Soviet space since the late 1980s, he always understood the inevitability of a major attack on Ukraine. Since 2014, Glyadelov has been photographing the Russian-Ukrainian war, convinced that the best weapon in his hands is the camera.

Before the screening, Ihor Suhorukov (“Nomadische Boekenplank”), a Ukrainian culture enthusiast, will give a brief lecture introducing Glyadelov’s periods, style, and the historical context behind his powerful images.
