From generative to regenerative technology

Until now, research and science have mainly focused on sustainability. But the question is: what are we actually trying to preserve? Many initiatives fail to recognise the reality of natural resources that are already depleted and the damage we have caused. In order to truly think and act differently, we need new ideas and experiments that take us out of our comfort zone.
In Waag's workshop From Generative to Regenerative Technology during the We Are Warming Up festival, you will explore alternatives to the endless cycle of exploitation of natural resources and the hidden costs of digital systems with Ola Bonati and Judith Veenkamp.
We will dive deeper into Permacomputing: a radically different view of how we design, deploy and repair technology, beyond the familiar principles of circularity.
During the workshop, you will learn a new way of thinking about technology that is not only circular, but also innovative and restorative. In addition, you will be given practical exercises and the space to experiment with ideas for technology that can truly heal our world.
Permacomputing during Warming up
The workshop is part of a two-part series on permacomputing offered by Waag Futurelab and FIBER during Warming Up festival. The series consists of the workshop From Generative to Regenerative Technology and the panel discussion (De)Growing Infrastructures, which can be attended separately. The panel discussion will take place on Thursday 27 November from 8:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
About Warming Up festival
We Are Warming Up. Just like the rest of the world. But what does that mean? And what can we do about it? Warming Up presents and produces art and media projects related to climate issues. Because the cultural sector brings people together and knows better than anyone how to touch the hearts of audiences with music, stories and images.
We Are Warming Up is an initiative of Stichting Impact Makers and Tolhuistuin.
