Friday jazz bar invites: Hermanos Martinez

The Martinez Bros.

The saxophonists and brothers Juan and Miguel Martinez are working together since the mid eighties in different ensembles. Together they are leading The Martinez Bros, a band that is musically dedicated to contemporary jazz with influences from flamenco-jazz and traditional Bulgarian musicin a traditional jazz quintet line-up. Gypsy rhythms from the Balkans, Spanish bulerías and tangos, and swing are combined with advanced harmonies based on modal tonalities. The Martinez Bros. played at various Dutch festivals and venues a.o. the North Sea Jazz festival, Jazzpodium DJS, Hot House Redbad and was invited to several international festivals in Sofia, Pomporovo and Varna. Two concerts (2007 and 2015) were broadcast on Bulgarian national television.

The Martinez Bros. brings together saxophonists Juan and Miguel Martinez who live and work in the Netherlands. Miguel won the Hoeilaart and Getxo festivals and played all over the world as the leader of his own bands. Juan is artistic director of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and collaborated with numerous illustrious jazz soloists in major concerts and international festivals. The rhythm section has an all-star lineup with master pianist Rob van Bavel, the great Jeroen Vierdag on bass and the new stellar talent Tim Hennekes on drums.
