Food & the City

What is the best way to produce food in an urban landscape? During the 'Weekend van de Wetenschap' (Weekend of Science), Mediamatic opens up its Bio Clean Lab and Hydroponics Greenhouse for all who are interested in the cultivation of plants, herbs, and mushrooms. Join one of the four free tours on Saturday and Sunday and enjoy a tasting of drinks made from our plants!

Visit the Hydroponics Farm
We first started with an aquaponics system, which is a way to grow plants and fish together in a closed system. The fish excrete ammonia, which gets transformed by bacteria into nitrate, the latter being used from the plants.
Now, after some ethical considerations and practical hindrance, we're solely relying on coffee, waste and canal water.
During the Hydroponics Tour we will guide you through our sustainable greenhouse and introduce you to this form of urban agriculture.
The tours are for free and will be held on Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 - 17:00. Tours start at 14:00 / 15:00 / 16:00
Taste locally produced herbs
We'll have delicious fermented drinks and teas available, all crafted in our very own greenhouse for everyone to enjoy
