FCA Sunday Group Discussion: Bodily Autonomy in Intimate Relationships

The topic of bodily autonomy in romantic relationships is complex and nuanced, raising questions of power, intimacy and consent. Clear transgressions of bodily autonomy such as domestic violence are widely acknowledged and discussed (though arguably still not enough). However, more subtle microagressions and power disbalances often go unnoticed, yet can profoundly impact personal agency. This primarily affects non-male individuals in relationships with men.
This manifests in various ways, ranging from pressures linked to societal ideals, to challenges with navigating consent and setting/updating boundaries. Women and non-male individuals often face the expectations to 'act' feminine, through their appearance, behaviour and emotional labour. This can clash with identity, self-image and bodily autonomy. Furthermore, the notion of consent becomes somewhat blurred in (long-term) relationships - how clearly should consent be given? Does this evolve with time, along with the relationship? Where do responsibilities lie in ensuring mutual respect?
By looking into these questions, we would like to invite you to a discussion about the complexities of intimacy, bodily autonomy and self-image in the pursuit of more equitable relationships.
