FCA Book Club - Fables and Spells: Collected and New Short Fiction and Poetry

Fables and Spells: Collected and New Short Fiction and Poetry, by adrienne maree brown, on the 15th of March, upstairs at NieuwLand at 16:30

The time has come to announce our next read! In this kaleidoscopic collection, adrienne maree brown explores themes of existence, loneliness, marginalization and liberation. It is impossible to narrow this collection down into a single genre; brown’s writings build upon each other to create a wonderful cascade of hope and dreams, a call to imagine a better future for oneself and the community around you.

To purchase the book there are a few options. In Amsterdam, the book is available to pick up/order at the lovely bookshop Het Fort van Sjakoo, which also always has a great collection of feminist literature to further diversify you bookshelves – https://sjakoo.nl/en/

If you are based in Utrecht you can send an email to the lovely bookstore Bijleveld, and they will promptly order it for you. In my experience it takes around 4 working days for the book to arrive at the bookstore (and if you are picking it up yourself there I would recommend perusing their selection, as they always have the most amazing picks out) - https://www.boekhandelbijleveld.nl/bestel-een-boek/

Finally, the book (as well as its digital and audio versions) is also available to order directly from the publisher’s web page - https://www.akpress.org/fablesandspells.html

Here is what brown’s own website has to say about the book:

“Fables and Spells is a vibrant selection of visionary works, both previously published and brand new. Included here is brown’s most beloved story, “The River,” as well as the two sequel tales of her Water Trio. The remaining sixty-seven pieces explore moments of beauty, conflict, and transformation that also weave deep, radical lessons. With narrative “fables” of speculative fiction and “spells” that play with the lines between poetry, instruction, song, and chant, Fables and Spells demonstrates how good writing can engage the present while providing expansive visions of the possible worlds humans can build.”
