FCA Book Club - Beyond the Gender Binary

Our next read is Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon and at 64 pages this is a rather short read.

In Beyond the Gender Binary, ‘the author, whose parents emigrated from India, writes about how enforcement of the gender binary begins before birth and affects people in all stages of life, with people of color being especially vulnerable due to Western conceptions of gender as binary. Gender assignments create a narrative for how a person should behave, what they are allowed to like or wear, and how they express themself. Punishment of nonconformity leads to an inseparable link between gender and shame’.

NieuwLand receives no subsidies and is run entirely by volunteers, please think about donating something if you are able as this helps us keep the lights on and our events free.

To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc)

Currently there are heavy roadworks outside of NieuwLand and the street has been dug up leaving replacement panels instead of a pavement. If you have access needs regarding the event, that you feel may not be in place, please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these.

The beautiful Het Fort van Sjakoo in Amsterdam has several copies listed as being in stock and is usually open to be contacted if you wish to order something they do not have https://sjakoo.nl/product/beyond-the-gender-binary/
