Election debate: getting a grip on tech

Election debate: getting a grip on tech

In the run-up to the 2026 municipal elections, we invite Amsterdams future politicians to discuss our digital public space. Our city is in a double bind: the council has committed to measures to make the city less dependent on American big tech. On the other hand, large data centres, hyperscalers and AI campuses are claiming our public space. On Thursday 12 March, we will be talking to candidates from Amsterdam's political parties to hear where they stand.

Amsterdam has played an important role in the development of the internet for decades. Progressive science, a dynamic hacker culture and the creative makers here have helped shape the digital landscape. How can we make the best use of our capabilities now that geopolitical pressure is increasing? We are seeing a growing dependence on large technology companies, warfare via social media and a society that is insufficiently prepared for technological challenges. How can we safeguard public and democratic values in Amsterdam in a world where technology and artificial intelligence are evolving at lightning speed?

We invite you to an in-depth election debate at Waag Futurelab, where we will discuss digitisation with the future politicians of our municipality. We will have experts give short introductions on these themes, after which there will be room for representatives of the political parties to present their vision and concrete proposals.
