Echoes of Our Planet

Echoes of Our Planet is a unique encounter between the distant past and the present. The award-winning Spanish ensemble Dianto Reed Quintet – known for their theatrical, refreshing approach to chamber music – joins forces with multi-instrumentalist and sound explorer Abraham Cupeiro for a captivating musical journey through time.
Using instruments from ancient civilizations alongside modern reed instruments, they bring to life sounds rooted in humanity’s shared memory. From prehistory to today, music emerges as a universal language that transcends time and culture.
Pangea – Abraham Cupeiro
Named after the ancient supercontinent, Pangea dives deep into the origins of music and culture. Cupeiro draws on rare and ancient instruments such as the Karnyx (a two-meter-long Celtic war trumpet), the Shofar (a traditional Jewish ram’s horn), and the Hulusi (a Chinese reed instrument).
This work is an acoustic archaeological exploration of the musical ecosystems of our distant ancestors, weaving together sounds from different continents and centuries.
Fantasia and Jhalla – Arjan Linker (world premiere)
A newly commissioned piece by composer Arjan Linker, written especially for this program.
Fantasia flows expressively through a variety of Indian ragas, ornamented in the lively style of tappa – a semi-classical vocal tradition known for its fast and colourful flourishes.
The second movement, Jhalla, inspired by dhrupad (the oldest surviving form of Indian classical music), restores musical balance in a fast-paced, rhythmically intricate conclusion.
