EAT

During EAT, we invite you to disrupt your morning ritual and try a new approach to spending time where every minute, and even second, counts. In a Concert-Ritual-Breakfast, musician Shannon Lee will perform a five-course violin composition paired with unique flavors.
EAT is an installation performance series initiated in 2023 by Tomoko Mukaiyama. It explores the rituals of morning practices and the subtle interplay between cultural habits and natural forces that shape them.
Each edition of EAT delves into the material and sensory dimensions of our daily beginnings. For this iteration, we welcome artist Matilda Stolfa and musician Shannon Lee. This edition centers around water—its constant flow, its shifting presence, and the way it escapes human control. The meal becomes a ritual in itself: an offering, a meditation, a shared moment.
Over the course of a one-hour sound experience, EAT unfolds as a five-course journey featuring foraged ingredients and plants that thrive in saltwater and wet conditions. A meditative gateway into the day, EAT invites us to tune into the body, to sound, to taste, and to the landscapes we inhabit.
"In a historical moment when water is trapped in a paradox—where clean drinking water is increasingly scarce, and yet our cities are threatened by floods—water becomes an element that resists control.
Perhaps instead of trying to master it, we can learn to follow its rhythms. As the tide rises, we learn how to float, how to let go. In doing so, we begin to redefine our relationship with the living landscapes around us.”
- Matilde Stolfa

About the Artists:
Tomoko Mukaiyama is a Dutch-Japanese pianist, visual artist and director based in Amsterdam. In 1991 she was the first Japanese pianist to win the prestigious Dutch Gaudeamus competition and in 1993 she won the Muramatsu Prize in Japan, which is awarded to an outstanding musician. She has been engaged by many prestigious orchestras and ensembles throughout the world, like the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others. Tomoko pushes on the boundaries of the classical music world; she has a fascination for offbeat contemporary art projects and plays with the conventions around her instrument, her profession and its performance. Tomoko uses her experience as a concert pianist to bring new dimensions to the concert space – as a multi-modal artist she develops performing arts projects and art installations that combine music with modern dance, fashion and visual art.

Born in Ravenna, Italy, in 1996 and based in Rotterdam, Matilde Stolfa is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher whose practice revolves around the investigation of the interdependencies between environment, dwelling, socioeconomic and cultural factors in an age of extreme climate change.
Her research specifically focuses on the relationship between water and land, grounding her work in shallow waters, intertidal zones, marshes and overall in transitional spaces. Through site-specific and site-responsive installations, documentary, photography and material research she crafts immersive and intuitive narratives. Matilde sees herself as a storyteller, constantly crafting new narratives that explore and adapt to our changing coastlines and rising sea levels.
