Dziesmas - Songs from the Baltics
An immersive musical journey, reimagining traditional songs from the Baltic vocal traditionsunfolding within sacred spaces.

Navis is a new project featuring Liva Dumpe on vocals, Jasper Blom on reeds, Sean Fasciani on bass, and Felix Schlarmann on drums, drawing inspiration from the Baltic vocal musical tradition. In their program Dziesmas, the ensemble explores the connection between people through space and folkloric music, creating an immersive experience for both performers and audience. The acoustics of sacred spaces are an integral part of the sonic experience and at the same time form an indispensable element for the ensemble.

The project began with the adaptation of traditional songs from the Baltic region spanning past centuries. Through contemporary rearrangements, these timeless pieces are brought into the present, guiding the audience on a melancholic journey between past and present, dream and reality.

A significant part of the program is inspired by Latvian traditional songs, known as dainas—short, poetic songs passed down through generations, reflecting rural life and everyday events.

The ensemble is enriched by the presence of Liva Dumpe, a gifted Latvian singer living in Amsterdam that is poised to receive increasing attention within the European jazz scene in the coming years. With remarkable musicality and craftsmanship, deeply rooted in Baltic vocal traditions, she brings a natural, folk-based expressiveness—rarely encountered in the Netherlands—that has an enchanting, almost hypnotic effect on both the audience and her fellow musicians.
