In light of D'Angelo's passing, we are screening the film “Devil's Pie” again this evening, in collaboration with Steppin' Into Tomorrow – an intimate and moving portrait of one of the most mysterious figures in the contemporary music scene, who achieved unrivalled status within the neo-soul movement with his albums Brown Sugar (1995) and Voodoo (2000).
In the documentary, Dutch documentary maker Carine Bijlsma follows D'Angelo during the tour for his album Black Messiah. The soul musician had gone through a difficult period in the years prior, causing him to disappear from the public eye for more than a decade. During that time, he experienced a spiritual crisis due to his superstar status, which manifested itself in several tragedies and turning points in his life. Bijlsma delves into the world of the music legend and, through interviews with D'Angelo, big names such as Questlove, Pino Palladino, Alan Leeds (former tour manager of Prince and James Brown) and never-before-seen archive material, slowly discovers who D'Angelo really is. She takes us on a journey through his inner struggle between his poor Virginia roots, where he grew up in his grandparents' church, the temptations of the music industry and the power that music brings. What follows is a spiritual and extraordinary life story of a musical genius who also happens to be a global superstar...
