Ventilator Cinema proudly presents a new edition of the Decolonizing Minds series with a special screening of Sound of Berberia (2023), followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker Tarik El Idrissi and our host moderator Khadija Al Mourabit.

Sound of Berberia is a road movie, musical journey, and cinematic exploration of Amazigh identity across North Africa. The film follows two musicians travelling from the Rif Mountains through the deserts and landscapes of North Africa in search of the "real Amazigh sound."

Blending fiction, documentary aesthetics, and music, the film reflects on borders, memory, language, migration, and belonging. Along the way, the protagonists encounter musicians, activists, and communities whose stories reveal the rich diversity of Amazigh cultures and traditions.

Written and directed by acclaimed Moroccan filmmaker Tarik El Idrissi, Sound of Berberia is a unique independent production that took years to complete and features music inspired by Amazigh, Tuareg, and North African musical traditions.

Following the screening, Tarik El Idrissi will join us in person for a conversation about the making of the film, the search for Amazigh cultural memory, independent filmmaking, and the role of cinema in decolonizing narratives and archives.
