About Ceuvel Watches: Entrepreneurs from Noord

Amsterdam Noord is bursting with remarkable entrepreneurs. Makers, thinkers and doers who, with courage and creativity, are working on the city of the future. It is precisely here that initiatives emerge that are social, sustainable and innovative. During Ceuvel Watches: Entrepreneurs from Noord, you will meet these entrepreneurs and their stories. What drives them, what challenges do they face, and what can you learn from them?

Each evening is curated by a host: an entrepreneur from Noord with an inspiring story. The host chooses a film or documentary that connects to their work or fascination, and introduces the film themselves. Afterwards, you will talk with the host and other visitors, and there will be a surprising interactive element such as a tasting, demonstration or mini workshop.

So not a passive film night, but an evening full of personal stories and connection. Expect inspiration, new perspectives, and a chance to experience Noord’s entrepreneurial energy up close.

Meet the host of this evening: Gideon Loerakker

As the operating owner of Café de Ceuvel, Gideon focuses on running a successful hospitality business in the most sustainable way possible.
The aim is to create as little negative impact as possible, in the broadest sense of the word. Social, ecological and economic. He does this, among other things, by:

  • Ecologically by consciously sourcing locally, seasonally and organically (dynamically), using renewable energy, and using as many recycled materials as possible.
  • Through programming, creating a social, inclusive and accessible place for people from all walks of life.
  • All of this, of course, has to fit within an economic model that ensures the rent can be paid, as well as the tax authorities and the staff.
    With an academic background in environmental sciences and sustainable business administration, and a practical background in ecological gardening and years of hospitality experience, Gideon knows how to translate sustainability theory into the everyday reality of running a café restaurant.
    At the heart of it is the question: How do you run a business within the boundaries of our planet and with care for people, animals and nature?
    Gideon will elaborate on this question during the evening. He will give you a behind the scenes look into his own kitchen: how he came to certain ideas and how he then put them into practice. And what he still runs into on a daily basis while pursuing this mission.
