🎬 Cavia in Concert: The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) with live score by West Side Trio 🎶 (at Nassaukerk!)
After an amazing (and very sold out!) first edition of Cavia in Concert, our series of film and music performances organized in the amazing hall of the Nassaukerk in collaboration with Podium Nassau, Filmhuis Cavia is proud to present to you another legendary German silent film from 1926: The Adventures of Prince Achmed, by Lotte Reiniger!
The oldest surviving animated feature film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed is a truly impressive piece of work: a silhouette animation inspired by the tradition of Wayang shadow puppetry, the film is composed of 250,000 individual images, and is regarded as the first feature to make sure of special effects in film history. Meanwhile the story brings you to a magical world. Taken from the One Thousand and One Nights stories, the plot follows Prince Achmed as he falls in love with beautiful fairy Pari Banu, and battles evil sorcerer Abanazar.
To add to the magic, we have called up the West Side Trio, a string ensemble blending acoustic instruments with electronics sounds, who will provide a live scoring of the film.
Composed by Vera van der Bie (electric violin), Rani Kumar (viola), and Annie Tångberg (cello), the West Side Trio is an electric string trio. Their compositions can be described as fresh and cinematic, making extensive use of effects that alter the sound of the instruments in various ways. Additionally, all three members sing, which makes the sound of this trio even more unique. Their music clearly shows the influence of classical, pop, and jazz. They write songs with room for instrumental improvisation, groovy but also with a nod to European 'art music' from the past century.
Having released their first album titled Apocalyptic Sunrise in 2015, the Trio regularly composes new music for existing silent films, such as Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926) and Die Büchse der Pandora (1929). With their diverse sound and vocals, the trio adds a new layer to these beautiful classics.
All and all, come to church with us and make sure not to miss this event for the ages!
