The Albaidar Duo returns to Mezrab with a fresh repertoire of Arab musical classics, featuring bold new arrangements of Asmahan, Oum Kalthoum, and beloved folk pieces, alongside a couple of the duo’s very first original songs and ballads, inspired by Marwan’s poetry and the landscapes of southern Syria. These tunes promise a new intensity within a warm, folky atmosphere, with melodies carefully woven into this intimate chamber performance.

Albaidar Duo is a unique collaboration between two independent artists that started in 2014 while they were members of the Prague- based ensemble Ziriab. In 2023, Kristýna and Marwan published music videos as a tribute to Arab divas Asmahan and Layla Mourad. In May 2024, they performed at Kettle’s Yard gallery in Cambridge, responding to an exhibition by Syrian visual artist Issam Kourbaj. Drawing inspiration from one of the recurring themes in Kourbaj’s artwork, wheat seeds, they took the name Albaidar as a symbol of new life cycles and the recognition of what is essential and vital.

Al baidar/البيدر is a place where wheat, barley, or other grains are cleansed and stacked after harvesting. Reflecting on essential themes such as love, nature, homeland, and more, the duo finds their voice by presenting the best of Arabic music in intimate arrangements, enhancing the traditional timbres of the oud, daf, riq, and nay with the Western flute.
