SUMMARY:Timbre knows what happened
DTSTAMP:20260305T115330Z
DTSTART:20251128T190000Z
DESCRIPTION:With Imani Mason Jordan and Nikita Sena\; and Third Gut (Raoni
/ Muzho Saleh and\nAlec Mateo).\n\nTimbre knows what happened. It does. Vo
ices are containers and content at the\nsame time. Voice is ship and load.
This evening\, the second in Voice as\nLandscape‘s new focus on song\, is
dedicated to exploring the voice as an\ninstrument through two artistic c
ollaborations that propose diverse approaches\nto this.\n\nVoice is an ins
trument made of flesh and air. One that is sentient\, that\nremembers\, th
at is haunted. A glass of water now can clear a voice but a voice\nis ulti
mately an aftermath—of that body’s life and others that preceded it.\n\nIt
is also a resource we have\, one that moves through different emotional\n
spectrums and layers of knowledge. As a resource it is one we can save\, w
e can\nlend and we can of course instrumentalize to put forth in sound own
ideas of\nworld. Both proposals of the evening explore meaning and poetic
s of voicings\nbeyond language.\n\nImani Mason Jordan and Nikita Sena will
be visiting from Italy and the UK\,\nrespectively. Together they have bee
n exploring the potentials of sound matter\nfound in text and language bey
ond its literality. In their procedures they\nincorporate repetition\, imp
rovisation and archive to distort preconceived forms\nof meanings but also
produce new ones that resignify established structures of\nsense.\n\nThis
evening will be the first public offering of Third Gut. Third Gut is wher
e\nRaoni / Muzho Saleh‘s and Alec Mateo’s practices meet. A space for them
	 to\nexplore transformative sounding\, built on noise\, vocality\, perform
ance and\nsacred mourning traditions. Raoni\, drawing from the Shia mourni
ng tradition\,\nworks with the wail as an embodied expression of grief\, t
hat carries in it\nemancipatory potentials and political urgencies\, and A
lec works with sound as a\nway to negotiate a fugitive relationship to mem
ory\, world\, and subject building.\n\nImani Mason Jordan is an interdisci
plinary writer\, artist\, editor and curator\ninterested in poetics and pe
rformance. Imani has written numerous articles\,\nreviews\, essays\, poems
\, plays and love letters\, some of which they have\npublished. Since 2016
\, they have developed a keen interest in poetics\, oration\,\nexperimenta
tion and practices of reading aloud\, from which they have synthesised\na
performance practice that centres writing and collaboration as well as usi
ng\nthe speaking voice as an instrument. After completing their MA in Fore
nsic\nArchitecture at Goldsmiths in 2019\, their pamphlet OBJECTS WHO TEST
IFY was\npublished by Taylor Le Melle at PSS. Imani is also Director of PA
PERFLESH\nPUBLISHING\, a multi-genre small press and editing studio for th
	e intellectually\nrigorous\, politically-minded black writer. Since 2019\,
Imani has collaborated\nextensively with Rabz Lansiquot as part of the ar
tistic and curatorial duo\nLanguid Hands.\n\nNikita Sena is a curator\, wr
iter and researcher from London\, by way of Ghana.\nHer practice is inform
ed by experimental pedagogies and the connection between\naesthetic forms
and their socio-political implications. Nikita is currently\nrifling throu
gh notions of ephemerality and abjection\, discomfort\,\ninappropriateness
and desire. A former curatorial fellow on the New Curators\nprogramme\, N
ikita is now part of the curatorial team working on the Kerry James\nMarsh
all exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.\n\nThird Gut is an experiment
al sonic performance project between Raoni/Muzho Saleh\nand Alec Mateo\, w
ho\, in their noisy bemoaned togetherness form a psycho-somatic\nspace for
undergoing the alchemical. A sonic tissue that lures the collective\ninto
the muddy waters of discomfort\, where becoming disturbed reveals a desir
ed\nfuturity. It is through the generative force of noise as sound\, that
Third Gut\naims to undo the brutality which masks as enlightened civility.
	\n\nRaoni/Muzho Saleh (1991 AFG/NL) is an artist with a bachelor‘s degree
in\nLiterary and Cultural Analysis (UvA) and a bachelor’s degree in Choreo
graphy\n(SNDO). Their work is influenced by fugitivity\, a revolutionary m
ovement that\nshapes his artistic vision. By dancing through the gender sp
ectrum\, Raoni has\ndeveloped a unique movement practice that emphasises b
ecoming “other” and\nchoreographing a continuous state of incompleteness.
Through the use of\nmaterials such as fabrics\, textile\, dough\, voice an
d text\, Raoni invites a\nserious kind of play into the space where both s
pectators and performers can\nbecome immersed in otherworldly narratives.
His intimate relationship with the\nmateriality of artistic practice allow
s for an ongoing negotiation of a wayward\nbecoming.\n\nAlec Mateo is a Do
minican artist from New York working with language\, sound\, and\nperforma
nce to explore the potentials of fugitivity\; an attempt to negotiate the\
	nrelationships between narrative and subject.
