	s why\nan individual practitioner might decide to undertake a PhD: a desir
	e to uplift\none’s practice\, to contribute to the intellectual artistic c
	limate\, to teach\, to\npursue an academic career\, or some combination of
	 these\, or other reasons.\n\nThe rise of artistic research or practice-ba
	sed research is subtly transforming\nthese disciplines. The integration of
	 research into practice\, however\, has not\nalways been smooth\, and the 
	transformations not unequivocally positive.\nFor this book we issued an op
	en call to ask artists how PhD research has\ninfluenced their making and t
	hinking. Our questions were: What are the impacts\,\nurgency\, and signifi
	cance of the PhD for creative practitioners? How are these\nunderstood\, c
	aptured\, communicated? How did it change your practice? We even\nasked: s
	hould creative practitioners undertake a PhD in the first place?\n\nThroug
	h its thirty contributions Thinking Back\, Making Forward tackles these\nq
	uestions in an open way\, to acknowledge\, equally\, the advantages and\nd
	isadvantages of the creep of the PhD into artistic practice. At the same t
	ime\,\nthis book shows a wide range of possibilities of what research in a
