SUMMARY:The Future of Global Digital Cultures
DTSTAMP:20260618T220127Z
DTSTART:20260630T150000Z
DESCRIPTION:What are the profound changes brought about by digitization aro
und the globe?\nAnd what will the future of global digital cultures look l
ike? From cultural\npractices to the rise of AI\, from new forms of friend
ship and sexual relations\nto platform cooperativism and the digital solid
arity economy – in this event we\nwill explore the recent past and future
of global digital cultures.\n\nThis event marks the close of the Research
Priority Area Global Digital Cultures\nat the University of Amsterdam. In
the past years\, GDC has constituted a\nvibrant\, interdisciplinary resear
ch community for comparing and analyzing the\nprofound changes brought abo
ut by digitization around the globe. These changes\nhave ranged from the t
ransformation in cultural practices\, from friendship\,\nintimacy and sexu
	al relations\, to the construction\, targeting\, and surveillance\nof publ
ics.\n\nDigital platforms and mobile apps\, such as Facebook\, Tinder\, Yo
	uTube\, Instagram\,\nNetflix\, the Russian platform VK\, and the China-bas
ed WeChat\, TikTok\, and\nTantan\, have rapidly become central to the prod
uction\, circulation\, consumption\,\nand monetization of culture. But how
wide-ranging and sweeping have these\nchanges been\, and what will be the
future of global digital cultures?\n\nIn his keynote lecture\, Prof. Rafa
el Grohmann (Assistant Professor of Media\nStudies\, Critical Platform Stu
dies\, University of Toronto) will reflect on these\ntopics and discuss ch
anges brought about by in and around digital labour\, the\nrise of AI in w
ork and the cultural sector\, particularly from the perspectives\nof worke
rs and through platform cooperativism and digital solidarity economy\,\nes
pecially in Latin America.\n\nThe roundtable will continue this discussion
and reflect on the possibilities\nand unfinished futures of digital cultu
res and its global implications.\n\nThe roundtable will be moderated by cu
rrent RPA GDC directors\, Stefania Milan\n(Professor of Critical Data Stud
ies at the Department of Media Studies\,\nUniversity of Amsterdam) and Val
entina Carraro (Assistant Professor\, GPIO:\nPolitical and Economic Geogra
	phies\, University of Amsterdam).
