The Crossing is een avontuurlij ke missiecyclus van liederen en instrumentale stukken die het conc ept en de symboliek van een oversteek verkennen — in het bijzonde r het oversteken van waterwegen, of dat nu via een brug over een klein kan aal of een rivier is, of over een uitgestrekte zee of oceaan. De overtocht van de ene oever naar de andere verbeeldt een overgang van de ene toestand naar de andere: het vertrouwde achterlaten om een nieuw avontuur aan te gaan. De oversteek kan zowel worden opgevat als een fysieke passage als een symbolische reis, die een transformatie markeert van de ene staat van zijn naar de andere, of z elfs een overgang van het leven naar het hiernamaals.

Het werk laat zich inspireren door mythologie en volksverhalen, zoals de veerman Charon, die zielen over de rivier de Styx naar de overkant brengt; Sint-Christoffel, die reizigers over het water naar een veilige overkant leidt; en Nehalennia , de Nederlandse godin die zeelieden beschermt tijdens hun overtocht over Het Kanaal.
