DTSTAMP:20260906T121935Z
DTSTART:20260322T180000Z
DESCRIPTION:Avant-garde sci-fi anime Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space (2002
) became a cult\nhit – and is also about a cult: an ancient occult Minerva
sect\, which through\nthe ages conspired to become the capitalist mega-mo
	nopolist Catty & Co\; a plot\nelement for which directing-screenwriting-mu
sic duo t.o.L (‘trees of Life’) drew\ninspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s 19
66 novel The Crying of Lot 49.\n\nAlongside this wonderful mythology\, and
the Cat Earth setting (centred on Cat\nTokyo)\, cyber-noir sequel Tamala
2030 also continues the wild stylistic\ndiversity\, ranging from flat\, bl
	ack-and-white 2D animation to 3D CG imagery of a\ndark metropolis\, and fr
om colourful psychedelic visions to gritty cityscapes –\nall feeding into
	Tamala’s cult fame.\n\nPlus Tamala herself\, of course: in Tamala 2030\, o
ur cuddly cat is again the\nenigmatic centre of events. Always seeming car
efree\, she’d just as readily kick\nyou to the ground as give you an umbre
lla when it’s raining. She looks as if\nOsamu Tezuka was asked to design H
ello Kitty. Kawaii\, but foul-mouthed. The last\nfree spirit under cat cap
italism.\n\nOh\, and she’s also immortal and will remain one year old fore
	ver. It’s clear\nthat she’s metaphysically connected to Minerva’s mega-and
	roid Tatla – but how?\nAs a messiah\, a simple capitalist mascot\, or even
	 the means to end Cat Earth?\n\nClimate crisis\, capitalism\, pandemic – t
he same catastrophes that plague our\nplanet\, also threaten to destroy Ca
t Earth. This time with more complex\nanimation and a slightly easier-to-f
ollow storyline – although you can never\nreally know what’ll happen\, whe
n Tamala’s ready for “another fucking day”.\n\nMelkweg often hosts differe
nt types of programmes at the same time\, such as\nconcerts\, club nights
and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some\nnoise pollutio
n from other programmes during the screening.
