SUMMARY:Structural Racism in the Netherlands and Europe: What Can We Learn
	Beyond the US?
DTSTAMP:20261106T002539Z
DTSTART:20261119T190000Z
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decades\, the understanding of racism as “structu
ral” and\n“systemic” has traveled from the US context towards Europe. Also
in Dutch\npolitics\, policy and activism there is growing awareness that
racism is not only\nsomething inter-personal but also operates through oth
er mechanisms of\nreproduction\, many of which are structural and institut
ional.\n\nWhy has this understanding changed in the Netherlands? Do new un
derstandings\ninform policy and activism? And how does the Dutch situation
compare with the\nUnited States\, and what is the situation like in other
European countries? In\nthis event\, we will explore in what ways academi
c research can help advance\nefforts to make European societies more inclu
sive and combat various\nmanifestations and causes of racism. This public
evening brings together\nresearchers\, policymakers and anti-racist activi
sts.\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nPieter-Paul Verhaeghe is Professor of Sociology at t
he Vrije Universiteit of\nBrussels\n\nSarah-Jane Koulen works at the Colle
ge voor de Rechten van de Mens and is a\nformer researcher for the State C
ommittee against Discrimination and Racism.\n\nYamina Meziani is Associate
Professor of Sociology at the University of\nBordeaux.
